The Kaffir ancestry dates back to the 16th century, when Africans were brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese as soldiers and laborers. They settled in the Sirambiyadi area of Puttalam in the 1800s and stayed. The Kaffirs originally spoke a form of Portuguese Creole. While they no longer use that as their principal dialect, their music, known as Manja and Kaffringna, is performed in Portuguese. There are approximately 1,000 Kaffir descendants in the Puttalam region, 200 families, and 15 families also live in the East, near Trincomalee and Batticaloa. They speak fluently in Sinhala and Tamil as well.
The use tambourine, dholak, daily household items such as spoons, coconut shells and bottles a musical instruments. They were dressed gorgeously, and women wore matching jeweleries for their dresses.
